Don Carney, working away on his new collection for our show and party on April 19 <3 Don has been drawing the natural world since his childhood - it's his biggest source of inspiration. He started to hone his artistic sensibility while studying illustration and painting at the Art Institute of Boston before moving to New York City where he worked as an illustrator for fashion design clients. Shortly after moving to New York, Don met his partner John Ross and together they founded Patch NYC with a small collection of hand-detailed bags, scarves and hats made by John's mom. Bergdorf Goodman ordered this first collection as well as Barney's... and soon their design studio was flourishing with orders from around the world. It's so fun to think of these wonderful days of retail - when Barney's was really exciting to visit and there was always a sense of discovery with all the special things they would find and carry.... Patch's work was part of that! Today Don collaborates with Astier de Villatte, West Elm, Miriam Haskell, Monoprix France, Antoinette Poisson, Fragonard.... the list goes on! Part of what we love so much about what Don and John do is their constant inspired state... always looking, always creating. And you never know what they will dream up next. This new collection of artwork by Don feels so exciting for us - and also nostalgic at the same time. My mom has one of Don's beautifully framed ink drawings in her living room, and I have one of his stitched pieces he used to make with his mom in my home. We have had various series of works by Don at the shop over the past 20 years that we have felt honored to share with you. In the photos above, you can see the frames from Don's collection - he works with these to create the drawing that will go inside. And together, once all the pieces are framed, they look incredible together. We love them mixed with vintage artwork, and they can also go modern.
